    The masterpiece directed by Sunao Katabuchi and produced by MAPPA is available for the first time in an extended version never before released overseas.

    Berlin, Germany, November 22, 2024 – Crunchyroll announces that the award-winning animated movie In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World is now available to its streaming service.

    Released in Japan in 2016 under the name In This Corner of the World, the movie is based on Fumiyo Kouno’s manga and directed by Sunao Katabuchi (Mai Mai Miracle). It was the second anime produced by MAPPA (JUJUTSU KAISEN, Attack on Titan: THE FINAL SEASON, Chainsaw Man) for a theatrical release.

    Set in Japan in 1944, the film tells the story of Suzu, a young woman who moves to a small town near Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. 

    The critical reception has been extremely positive. Screened at many festivals, the movie received more than 60 awards, including the Hiroshima Peace Film Award, Grand Jury Prize for Best Film at 6th Toronto Japanese Film Festival or  Jury Award for Feature Film at 41st Annecy International Film Festival. It also won three prizes at the 40th Japan Academy Prize. The movie was also distributed in theaters in many countries over the world. 

    In 2019, 39 minutes of additional sequences were produced for a re-issue in Japan. Bringing the movie’s running time to 168 minutes, it becomes one of the two longest theatrical animated films to date. Titled In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World, this new extended version was never released overseas. 

    Official Synopsis

    The award-winning story of IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD follows a young lady named Suzu Urano, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II. Her perseverance and courage underpin this heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by the Japanese in the midst of a violent, war-torn country. This beautiful yet poignant tale shows that even in the face of adversity and loss, people can come together and rebuild their lives.

    About Director Sunao Katabuchi

    Animation film director born in 1960. Participated as a screenwriter in Miyazaki’s “Sherlock Hound” animated series while still a student in the Japan College of Art. He was then also part of “Kiki’s Delivery Service” in 1989, which was also directed by Miyazaki. His debut as director was the animated series “Lassie” in 1996. While his first feature film was “Princess Arete” in 2001. Later on he directed, wrote and was in charge of series composition for animated series “BLACK LAGOON” in 2006. By 2009 he directed the “Mai Mai Miracle”, which told the story of a girl in Yamaguchi prefecture in the 1950s. The movie organically spread by word-of-mouth and achieved an exceptionally long screening period as well encore screenings. He also directed NHK’s reconstruction effort “Flowers Bloom” in 2013, with Fumiyo Kouno as character designer.
